S.T.A.M.P.E.D. is an easy to remember acronym for Size, Temperature, Application, Material or Media, Pressure, End and Delivery.
STAMPED covers the seven areas of general information that’s required to correctly identify a hose or hose assembly.
Size
The Inside Diameter of a hose is generally what size refers to. The Hose ID is an industry standard to get an accurate measurement of a hose.
The Outside Diameter or Hose OD may also be a critical measurement in tight places.
Hose or Reel Length is also an important measurement and consideration for a hose.
Temperature
Temperature covers both what is going through the hose and the outside temperature of the hose.
It is important to note and select a hose that is capable of handling the highest temperature spikes that the hose will encounter.
Application
Application is the conditions that the hose will be used under. Very hot or very cold temperatures will cause some hoses to fail where other hoses will excel.
Consider these when referring to application:
- Indoor vs Outdoor Use
- Abrasion, Oil, Solvents, Ozone, Acid and other external conditions
- Continuous or Intermittent Use
- Hose bend, flexibility and drag
Working conditions will have an affect on service life.
Material or Media
Material or media is used to identify if the tube of the hose is suitable. Selecting the incorrect hose material can create premature wear and tear on the hose.
Pressure
Pressure is important to determine and recommend the proper hose. Pressure can be referred to as Working Pressure, Rated Working Pressure, or be given with a minimum and maximum recommended pressure. It may vary by manufacturer.
Most hoses are designed and made with a 3 to 1 or 4 to 1 safety factor.
As an example, the Kurt TUFF Hydraulic Hose is made with a 4:1 working pressure safety factor. Refer to the Rated W.P. and Minimum Burst columns
Ends
Ends are the couples, fittings, and other attachment methods at the end of the hose. The style, type and even orientation are important factors to consider on coupled hose assemblies. Other considerations may include material of the ends, conductive properties, and orientation.
Industries like Food and Beverage, may require special hose and ends to be considered for proper use.
